About Alloa
Alloa is a small burgh in Clackmannanshire, Scotland, 7 miles to the east of Stirling, on the north bank of the River Forth.
Attractions:
Alloa's most notable visible landmark is the 15th century Alloa Tower, the surviving part of the ancestral medieval residence of the Erskine family, the Earls of Mar. Though much altered both externally and internally, the Tower retains its original medieval wooden roof and battlements, as well as some internal features. It is one of the largest (and earliest) of Scottish tower houses.
Alloa Athletic Football Club are a Scottish football team based in Alloa, Clackmannanshire. They are members of the Scottish Football League and currently play in the Second Division.
They are nicknamed 'The Wasps' for their kit's distinctive black and gold hoops and 'The Hornets' after the club adopted a cartoon Hornet for their club badge in 2010. Their home ground is currently Recreation Park, also known as The Recs. The ground has recently undergone a number of changes with the removal of the Hilton Road Terrace and the laying of a new artificial playing surface in the summer of 2007.
History:
The town formerly contained a large number of 17th and 18th century buildings, but most were cleared away in the 18th to 19th century. However, Alloa does retain some historic architecture in the form of Alloa Tower, Tobias Bauchop's House, Inglewood House, Gean House and Greenfield House.
Alloa Town Hall and Library was designed by the architect Alfred Waterhouse and built in 1886-9.
